Faith into Action
We believe that faith in Jesus should lead to action on behalf of Jesus. After all, it was he who said: "let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." So these are just some of the down-to-earth ways that people in this church put faith into action...
Street Pastors
Several of our Members are part of Plymouth's Street Pastor work, one of the largest teams in the country. Responding practically to the problems of crime and safety, they work as self-funded volunteers on Friday and Saturday nights in key areas of the city. An additional team serve as School Pastors in Plymstock on Friday afternoons. And every Street Pastor and School Pastor patrol is backed up with a team of people at the base praying for the work and the situations that they encounter.
In 2011 the Plymouth Street and School Pastors won the Team category for the Plymouth "Inspiring Volunteer of the Year" awards.
Plymouth Soup Run
Working to provide practical compassion for those who live on the streets, a team of volunteers take their turn once a month in the Soup Run organised by churches in the city. Distributing soup, sandwiches, friendliness and sometimes blankets or clothes, they bring a ray of hope and help.
Charities Committee
The Charities Committee co-ordinate our response to the large number of appeals that come from other charities or because of disasters. Through fundraising events and appeals they help ensure that we tithe (ie: give at least 10% of our turnover) to charitable concerns. There are also two charities which receive special support from the church:
TEAR Fund
Tearfund is a Christian international aid and development agency working globally to end poverty and injustice, and to restore dignity and hope in some of the world’s poorest communities.
St John's Orphanage, Kenya
St John's is a Christian school and orphanage which receives special support through child-sponsorship and teacher-sponsorship.
And more...
And then, of course, there are all the people who volunteer their time
- working with infants, children and youths
- working with parents and senior citizens
- looking after the premises
- providing music for worship
- leading homegroups
- providing transport
- arranging the flowers
- giving leadership to thee church
Together these people demonstrate the truth that church is like a body, which only works well when every part plays its God-given role!
